Twenty years ago — 1998

An OBSERVER photo shows a 10,000-gallon storage tank being placed on a flatbed truck at Get and Go on Route 60 in Fredonia late this week to make way for two new 15,000-gallon fuel tanks. A major expansion project is currently under way at the first convenience store on the Route 60 strip. The project includes new Mobil gasoline and diesel islands and an expanded mini-mart, according to co-owners Robert Hubbard and Dyanne Seeley.

Thirty years ago — 1988

The Chautauqua County Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Unit recently received a recognition award from the state Department of Social Services. The award was made to recognize the commitment and dedication of the Child Protective Caseworkers of Chautauqua County for their efforts to ensure the safety of children and to provide services to strengthen families. The presentation was made in Albany by Matilda R. Cuomo, honorary chairman of the New York State Council on Children and Families Senior Caseworker Charles Wheeler, who accepted the award on behalf of the caseworkers.

Forty years ago — 1978

The city of Dunkirk in 1979 will be spending $5.4 million for operating expenses and will be taxing property at the rate of $12.70 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. It will be the fifth straight year for the same tax rate in the city. City Treasurer Norman Woloszyn, who had very little input in the preparation of the budget, said that interest payments for bond anticipation notes sold in 1979 shouldn’t be budgeted until 1980. “You don’t pay the interest the same year,” he said. Mayor Gilbert Snyder said the money that is budgeted for interest payments could be transferred for other expenses.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Bill Bergey of Arkansas State, former outstanding athlete at Pine Valley Central School, has been named to a Little All-American Football Team by Associated Press. A 1964 graduate of Pine Valley, Bergey was selected as a linebacker on the All-American Team. The 6-3, 230-pound star played football, basketball, baseball and track at Pine Valley and, despite his size, could pole vault 11 feet.
