If Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace has his way, every one of his marked patrol cars will carry machines designed to save people having heart attacks. Gerace has asked the Chautauqua County Legislature for funding for 25 automatic external defibrillator units, or AEDs, so as to cut down on response time in treating people in full cardiac arrest. Gerace explained there is a seven-minute window of opportunity after which a person will either die or, if they survive, will have a reduced quality of life. The cost of the AEDs is $62,500, or about $2,500 per unit.
