Twenty years

ago — 1998

Dunkirk resident Robert Patterson will be the grand marshal of this year’s Santa Claus Parade. Mr. Patterson is in his 22nd year as executive director of the Dunkirk Youth Bureau and his 17th year as recreation director for the city of Dunkirk. He also served as general chairman of the Dunkirk Centennial Celebration and is active in numerous community clubs and activities. The parade is sponsored by Community Christmas Sharing With Children and the Dunkirk Business Alliance.

Thirty years ago — 1988

The Dunkirk Youth Bureau has announced the winners of its recent Thanksgiving poster contest, with Brian Majka of Dunkirk School 6 and Rachelle Ricotta and Tera Waclawski of St. Hyacinth’s School named Grand Prize Winners. All winners received prizes and gift certificates from Aldrich’s Dairy where the prize-winning posters will be on display. Children in Grades K-5 in Dunkirk public and parochial schools participated in the contest, submitting a total of 800 posters illustrating the topic, “What Thanksgiving Means to Me.”

Forty years ago — 1978

In an OBSERVER photo, Duane Clement and Fritz Jesse pose with Mr. Clement’s horse after the animal was hitched to a railing near the mayor’s favorite parking spot at Dunkirk City Hall. Mr. Clement has been ordered by the city to remove the horse from a field adjacent to Don’s Motel on Lake Shore Drive West. He rode the horse to City Hall where he met with City Court Judge August Jankowski, Building Inspector Charles Poland and City Attorney Walter Drag to discuss the eviction of his horse. He has a week to remove the horse from his property, Mr. Drag said.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Jean Centner, 16, of Chestnut Road, Dunkirk won second place in the Eastern teen-age division of the Young America Gardens contest. She received a $25 check from the Flower and Garden Foundation, sponsor of the national gardening competition for young people since 1960. This year, 4,500 children from 6 to 19 took part in the competition. Jean exhibited her garden flowers at the county fair and gourds at the state fair.
