Twenty years ago — 1998
Former Cardinal Mindszenty High School teacher and librarian, the Rev. Msgr. Antoine Attea, will observe the 40th anniversary of his ordination which took place in Rome on Dec. 20, 1958. His first assignments were at parishes in Collins Center and the south and west sides of Buffalo before being appointed to Mindszenty in 1966 and serving for 12 years. He taught English, theology, Latin and photography. In December of 1978, Msgr. Attea was appointed pastor of St. James Church in Jamestown and in September 1996 was appointed vicar of the 12 parishes of Chautauqua County.
Thirty years ago — 1988
The Dunkirk Common Council was presented with a 600-name petition asking that the road being built to replace the Doughty Street Extension be named Memorial Drive to honor six local teenagers killed in a car-train accident last year and a Dunkirk police lieutenant killed in a car accident earlier this year. The petition was presented to the council by Jason Thomas and Osvaldo Vazquez, who are students at Dunkirk High School.
Forty years ago — 1978
Dunkirk Mayor Gilbert Snyder and Councilman-at-Large William Schlichter appear in a photo published in the Dec. 16 edition of the New York Times. The mayor and council chairman were photographed while listening to Mayor Edward Koch of New York City at a meeting in the Big Apple recently. Also in the photo are Chautauqua County Executive Joseph Gerace and Jamestown Mayor Stephen Carlson.
Fifty years ago — 1968
The Rev. and Mrs. Jack T. Ziegler and daughter, Carol, have moved into their new home at 20 Lafayette Ave., Dunkirk. He is the new pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Dunkirk.
The long-awaited new 100-foot aerial ladder truck for the city of Dunkirk’s fire department was delivered in the middle of a snowstorm. The truck cost about $54,000.
