Twenty years ago — 1999

The National Guard arrived in Dunkirk to launch a round-the-clock effort to help the city dig out from under more than 50 inches of snow that has fallen since Dec. 31. Work began at midnight today in the Fourth Ward as four pieces of equipment and 11 men from the Binghamton area were deployed to assist city with snow removal efforts. The National Guard will be working in residential areas to remove hazardous accumulations of snow at intersections and to widen streets.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Shown in an OBSERVER photo are the first twins of the New Year born at Brooks Hospital. Mallory Margaret McCoy and Michael Francis McCoy were born Jan. 5 to Francis “Mac” and LuAnn Dignen McCoy of 119 Temple St., Fredonia. Weighing 5 pounds, 14 ounces, Michael was the first to arrive at 1:35 p.m. and Mallory followed at 1:44 p.m. weighing 6 pounds. The McCoys also have a 3-year-old daughter, Kelly.

Forty years ago — 1979

Fredonia Mayor Charles St. George announced that he will not be seeking a fifth term in office in the upcoming village election on March 12. The mayor cited differences with the village board and the desire to spend more time with his family as the primary reasons for his decision. He also noted the rift between him and the board concerned overspending and a $2 million dollar village budget, 50 percent of which goes toward the village payroll.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Claudia M. Campaign, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Campaign of Bradigan Road, Forestville is the Student of the Week. A senior at Forestville Central School, she is enrolled in a college entrance course. Claudia presently ranks third in her class and hopes to study pre-med in college. She is presently taking advanced placement courses at Fredonia State University. Claudia enjoys horseback riding, snowmobiling, sewing and knitting.
