Dunkirk Radiator Corp. is expected to merge with a Utica firm in a move that will create the third largest manufacturer and distributor of boilers in North America. The announcement was made by Dunkirk Radiator Corp. and The Utica Company as the two firms signed a letter of intent to merge operations. The new entity has yet to be named and is currently in the due diligence process. Current workforce figures will be more than likely sustained after the merger. As a combined entity, the new company will employ more than 300 people in Western and Central New York. Tom Reed is the president of Dunkirk Radiator while his cousin, Tim Reed, is the president of The Utica Company.

This year, unlike previous years, several gaggles of Canada geese have converged on the Dunkirk waterfront, particularly in Memorial Park. And while many residents enjoy their visit and feed the geese, reportedly these feathered fowl — hundreds of them, according to one eyewitness — have been leaving their share of a mess behind, including their excretions. Currently spotting an open area to congregate, the geese have landed in the Dunkirk small boat harbor and seem to enjoy the company of the sea gulls nearby.

Cobb Ambulance has been denied permission to continue to operate from 15 Newton St. in Dunkirk but owner John Cobb said he won’t even consider relocation plans until the crisis at Brooks Hospital calms down. The Dunkirk Zoning Board voted 4-1 against Mr. Cobb. The timing of the decision couldn’t be worse as Cobb Ambulance has beefed up its services to provide transport to area hospitals in the wake of an impending strike at Brooks Hospital.

An experimental program for preschool children of migrant families is being planned to begin the spring of this year. The program is being made available to 3 and 4-year-old children of migrant parents and will be comparable to the Head Start program. The project, under the auspices of BOCES, will be carried out at Sacred Heart Church in Dunkirk and will handle up to 60 children in four classes of 15 children each.
