Twenty years ago — 1999

In an effort to ensure that her “district work” is second to none, Sen. Pat McGee (R-C, 56th District) announced that she has appointed Kevin Muldowney of Dunkirk as her deputy district director and office manager of her Chautauqua County office in Jamestown. Mr. Muldowney, who served as a district supervisor to the late Sen. Jess Present from 1988 to 1996, has extensive knowledge of the 56th Senate District.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Two Gowanda elementary school girls are among 25 selected for the Western New York’s Children’s Chorus, which will make its debut at the Hamburg United Methodist Church. Alexis Weider is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Weider of Taylor Hollow Road, Gowanda. Bethany Palmer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Palmer of Wendy Drive, Collins. The goal of the Children’s Chorus, which was founded last fall, is to provide a select chorus ensemble to the children of Western New York. The ensemble gives members advanced training in vocal production, music reading and performance practice.

Forty years ago — 1979

Calendar Girl for the Month of February is Diane Zielinski, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Zielinski of Tenney Street, Dunkirk. A senior at Cardinal Mindszenty High School, she is a member of the National Honor Society and student council and served as secretary of the freshman class. Diane serves as head choreographer for this year’s musical as well as captain of the varsity cheerleaders. She also is president of the Girls Athletic Association.

Fifty years ago — 1969

William G. Bentley, assistant director of fish and game for the New York State Conservation Department in Albany, was the guest speaker at the ninth annual Evening OBSERVER-WBUZ deer hunters venison banquet at the Frank Acquavia American Legion clubrooms. A total of 90 persons who entered deer in the contest attended the banquet. An MFG boat will be presented to Joseph Zado of Angola, who had the heaviest deer at 181 pounds.
