A steel drum band is a new musical offering in the Dunkirk School District. Currently, 27 children at School 5 are involved in the program and plans are to offer the program next at School 3. Music teacher Cynthia Flaherty traced the start of the program back two years based on the students’ response after hearing a performance by a steel drum band from Randolph Academy Union Free School. A feature story by M. Louise Ratkoski relates how it was 20 years ago that Miss Betty Lou Latimer — now Mrs. Richard Schwertfager of West Main Road, Fredonia — took first place honors in the county cherry pie baking contest held at Cease’s Commissary in Dunkirk. Her prize was $15 and a trip to the state competition in Rochester. Winning first place there, she moved on to Chicago for the national competition. On Feb. 22, she won the 1949 national cherry pie baking contest and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, where she baked another pie for presentation to President Harry S. Truman.
