Twenty years ago — 1999

Silver Creek firefighters recovered 10 plastic crates of undelivered mail from the creekbed of Walnut Creek under the Stebbins Road bridge. They rappelled about 110 feet into the ravine to retrieve the mail. The mail was primarily from the Amherst and Kenmore area. Items recovered included everything from letters to store circulars. The mail was about three weeks old. The employee responsible for dumping the shipment has been identified and suspended without pay.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Two students from Silver Creek Central School will be among those participating in the All-Eastern United States Music Conference in Boston, Mass. Elizabeth George and Collin Reid were selected from the finest musical talent available in 11 states. A clarinetist, Elizabeth is the daughter of Mr. Francis George and the late LaVerne George. Collin has been selected for the All-East Orchestra on French horn. Selection to the All-East group is the highest musical achievement that these students can attain.

Forty years ago — 1979

The next time you see pictures of the Blue Angels, the flight demonstration team of the Navy, it’s possible the photographs were taken by a Cassadaga resident. Jeff Crandall of Cassadaga was one of two Blue Angels photographers in 1974. His actual job as photographer was to document each air show, about 70 a year, in pictures. Most of the pictures are used in public relations efforts.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Dunkirk’s Trish Hanley will again appear on the weekend telethon benefiting the Children’s Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Buffalo. This is the third consecutive appearance for the 10-year-old singer. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Hanley, 607 Eagle St. A fifth-grade student at School 4, the talented entertainer will be accompanied by the Pit Band from the Frontier Village Red Garter Playhouse, where she will begin her third summer engagement during the Memorial Day weekend.
