Twenty years ago — 1999

This year, the Variety Club Telethon featured 4-year-old Brittany Dunlap of Cassadaga as the Dunkirk satellite child. The telethon, which aired on WKBW-TV Channel 7, featured vignettes of Brittany throughout the broadcast. Brittany, the daughter of David Dunlap and Becky Rowicki, was born with arthergrypnosis, a rare physical condition, which limits her mobility. Since then, she has gained limited use of her arms and legs. Ms. Cynthia Hucksoll-Barabasz, appeared on the broadcast to present donations from the local satellite.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Cassadaga Valley Central School junior John Penhollow finished second in the 177-pound weight class at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships this past weekend at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse. The CVCS wrestling team captain, John finished his outstanding season with a 35-1 record that included five tournament titles and a league championship. He was an all-conference football players for the Cougars.

Forty years ago — 1979

A Dewittville housewife and businesswoman, Mrs. Barbara Barmore, has developed and patented “Nail-Ayde,” a small device which she says assists in relieving pain and controlling ingrown toenails. Mrs. Barmore and her two sons, Brent and Craig, are planning to set up shop at their Route 17 home and produce and market the item. The product is 100 percent stainless steel and said to be as simple as the paper clip, bobby pin or staple.

Fifty years ago — 1969

A new animal hospital will be opening shortly in the town of Pomfret. Dr. Josef M. Powell, a former local resident, has returned to his hometown area to begin his veterinary practice. Dr. Powell is a graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School, Cornell University and the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell. His new practice will be located at the corner of Route 60 and Lakeview Drive. Dr. Powell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ryman Powell of Laona.
