Twenty years ago — 1999

The board of directors of the Fredonia Chamber Players announced the establishment of the Grant Cooper Endowment Fund at a reception held recently at the home of Fredonia State President Dennis Hefner. At the end of the current season, Mr. Cooper will be stepping down as music director and principal conductor of the Chamber Players, a position he has held since 1982. Income from the endowment will be used to provide continuing support for the orchestra’s concent and educational programs.

Thirty years ago — 1989

From Ad News ….. Where would you look for sporting equipment and apparel? The Sports Section of course! It’s a newly-opened general sporting goods store at 60 West Main in Fredonia. They offer a variety of team uniforms, pro jackets, equipment and much more. Owner Terry Presto is a phys-ed major from Brockport and former coach in Brocton. Manager Sharon Kaminski-Nichols brings retailing experience from the former G. C. Murphy Co.

Forty years ago — 1979

Student of the Week is Connie Pope, a senior in the health services program at the Fredonia BOCES. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Pope of Bennett State Road, Forestville. Connie has accumulated more than 250 hours as a volunteer Candy Striper. She studies piano, teaches Sunday School, sings in her church choir and has been a member of the Dunkirk Twirling Cadettes for four years. Following graduation, Connie hopes to attend nursing school.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The “Good Evening” column by Robert Dyment features a profile of Lynn Christie, a professional singer and wife of Dunkirk City Court Judge August R. Jankowski. Born Jacquelyn Kristoff in Reading, PA, she became a singer on radio at the age of 14 and was a USO worldwide entertainer. During the Korean War, she traveled 100,000 miles while touring Africa, Europe and Korea as a vocalist with the USO shows. More recently, she has become a frequent performer at the world-famous Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
