Dunkirk: Ninth event takes a walk

Make no mistake about it – our region’s residents love their dogs. On Sunday at Point Gratiot in Dunkirk, hundreds of volunteers and participants took part in the ninth annual Pat McGee Memorial Dog Walk to benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society.

For years, the society has been caring for animals and finding people to adopt those at the shelter.

“It’s taken several forms because eight years we used to do it at Russell Joy Park in Fredonia,” said Rock Vallone, vice president of the shelter and dog owner. “And then we started raising money to build the building (animal shelter). We wanted to make it a bigger event and have it down here at the Point.”

Many have said the Point can be underutilized during the summer months. That was not the case over the weekend.

Money raised from the event assists the Lakeshore Humane Society, which has proven to be a community asset.
