Give it a brake in zones

Simply put, motorists need to use extra caution this week.

With Labor Day celebrations complete, many parents and children begin to focus on the opening of school. Many districts will open their doors on Wednesday and others will start on Thursday.

While students have their minds on seeing friends, meeting their teachers and the upcoming slate of studies, motorists need to remember to slow down in school zones. In most areas, the limit is 15 mph. In Fredonia, the limit reduces from 40 mph to 30 mph.

“Our priority in enforcing this law is for the safety of the children. As always, voluntary compliance is very helpful but there will be strict enforcement and traffic summonses will be issued for the safety of the children,” Dunkirk police Chief David Ortolano stated. “The few seconds it takes to slow down will not disrupt anyone’s day. We want everyone to be aware and pay close attention to children who are walking to and from school.”

Motorists have been warned. Slowing down may be an inconvenience, but fines are costly and unnecessary.

Driving with caution keeps our children safe.
