Ripley: No winner in legal battle

How can taxpayers cost other taxpayers more money? Quite simply, by filing a lawsuit – and that is exactly what the Ripley school district faced after a tuitioning vote was approved last February.

A legal challenge to the decision, announced last May, is expected to cost the district $58,000. “It probably will (impact the budget) if the costs continue. I don’t know if we’re finished with these costs,” said Karen Krause, Ripley superintendent. “It just depends if the costs continue to keep accruing or if we’re done and the commissioner decides and we move forward.”

The problem with voting is a lot like athletics. There is a winner and there is a loser. Currently, those students being tuitioned by Ripley – in grades seven to 12 – are the beneficiaries of increased programs, extracurricular activities and sports at Chautauqua Lake school district.

If those students were still in Ripley, instead of the extra classes, the students would be taking extra study halls.

If lesser academics and programming for students is the goal of those filing the lawsuit, that certainly is a losing proposition for Ripley students.
