Navigating the area roads

Last week, a state Department of Transportation worker spoke about how tough it can be fighting whiteouts and heavy snow to keep the major routes clear.

During major snowstorms, like the one from Dec. 11 that dumped a foot of snow in three hours, plowing seems as though it is a losing battle. But other days, such as Thanksgiving in Dunkirk, just left many drivers frustrated.

Recently, an anonymous letter was dropped off regarding plowing. It is a whimsical commentary to the holiday tune “Winter Wonderland.”

Drivin’ Through a Winter No-Man’s Land

Snowflakes fall, but they’re ignoring.

To clear the streets would send costs soaring.

Not a snowplow in sight?

Yea, that’s Dunkirk alright –

We’re drivin’ through a winter no-man’s land.

In their homes, people wonder:

Is it a plan, or just a blunder?

Some wards see a plow,

But others – oh, wow

They’re drivin’ through a winter no-man’s land.

Every now and then there comes a plower,

And if you’re like me, you wonder why,

It throws away each precious costly hour

With its blade raised up into the sky.

Plowing streets is a service,

But the cost makes them nervous.

City residents pay,

But our bucks melt away

We’re drivin’ through a winter no-man’s land.

But it’s with us that the fault is,

We should drive just where the salt is-

When they don’t plow the snow,

It melts faster, ya know

Keep drivin’ through a winter no-man’s land.

It may be, there’s a reason

To let the flakes control the season.

Could they explain it all

‘fore the next winter squall?

We’re drivin’ through a winter no-man’s land.
