ATHLETICS: Devil women making history

Possibly the most impressive story last year on the local college sports scene was that of the Fredonia State Blue Devil women’s basketball team. It qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference playoffs, hosted a memorable overtime victory over Brockport and finished with a 19-8 record.

It was their greatest year ever.

Despite Tuesday’s loss to Nazareth, this year’s edition seems to be on a similar road. With local talent that includes Khee Nance, Alisha Szumigala, Emma Weyand and Jenna Einink, the Devils are proving to be competitive as well as entertaining.

Already this year, the team broke the 100-point mark in a win over Penn State Behrend. It also has a 1,000-point scorer in senior guard Alexis Cheatham, who reached the milestone on Tuesday.

This weekend, the team hosts Potsdam and Plattsburgh. It is a chance to establish some more SUNY dominance.
