DUNKIRK: A slow turn of the corner

There was actually a little excitement at Friday’s State of the City address by Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas. Residents, business owners, executives and local officials attended the event in City Hall.

It was impressive.

Rosas has made it clear, his intentions are not about politics. If they were, he would have sugar-coated references to the village of Fredonia and previous administrations during his presentation.

He is disappointed by the lack of cooperation — and the attention to detail — he has seen. But he is not deterred.

Listening to Rosas gave not only residents hope, it gives hope to those who have left Dunkirk for more robust economies. In only one year, Rosas has been at the helm and partnered in boosting jobs at Fieldbrook Foods. He has taken the reins — and responsibility — for a North County Water District.

He has eyes on a revitalized waterfront that includes a new hotel.

Yes, Dunkirk, think big. We can become a destination. We have a lake. A wonderful summer of events. And, we now have a vision.

Some who voted or supported Rosas in the 2015 election believe things are not moving fast enough in the city. Rosas would agree.

But there are some positive steps being taken. And, most importantly, Dunkirk has real leadership for future partnerships on a local and state level.

That is more than half the battle.
