Higher, but not all better

Just what do we take from the recent state Education Department report regarding recent graduates? Only that we are getting a little bit better in Chautauqua County.

As we noted last week, the graduation rate of the 2016 class fared 1 percent better than those in 2015 with 84 percent making the grade locally. On the positive side, it’s an increase. Looking more as the glass being half empty, there’s still plenty of work to be done.

We do tip our hat to the only schools to top the 90 percent mark — Forestville and Fredonia. While Fredonia is noted as being a high-achieving district, there’s something truly special about Forestville. It has a family spirit that is quite connected to the community.

Other districts, though improved, are still underperforming. Maybe there is something — the close-knit atmosphere — to be learned from Forestville.

Dunkirk, which had the lowest graduation rate of 78 percent, faces challenges that differ from other north county schools due to its being a small-city district.

Greater concerns, however, are rural districts such as Brocton, Cassadaga Valley and Westfield. With rates ranging from 80 to 85 percent, districts need to find out why numbers are slipping.

Westfield and Brocton, of course, are quite interesting. The two districts are quite similar, even though Westfield residents who rejected the consolidation three years ago may not want to admit it.

They already share sports and, quite possibly, need to look at doing more together to maintain and promote success in students.
