Highs and lows: Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:
BEST
BOWLED OVER — Congratulations go out to Fredonia Hillbillies bowling team. For the first time in school history, the team won the Section 6 Class C high school bowling championship. It’s Tom Battaglia’s 16th year coaching the team. He credited the veteran players and the strength of the Lucky Lane Junior Program. “When you have the success of our program and how well the Dunkirk girls have done (going undefeated this year), it comes back to the kids being dedicated and dedicated to junior bowling,” he said. We agree.
WINTER CELEBRATION — This weekend is the President’s Day Winter Festival in Mayville. With the warmer temperatures, an ice castle couldn’t be constructed, but nonetheless there will be plenty of activities. Today there will be a cold water rescue demonstration at 11:30 a.m.; the Polar Plunge at noon; horse drawn rides from noon to 4 p.m.; a snowball distance throwing contest at 2:30 p.m.; a pet parade at 3 p.m.; a bon fire at 6:30 p.m.; a flare parade at 7 p.m.; fireworks at 8 p.m. Sunday events include a Fire and Ice Volleyball Tournament, children’s snowman building contest, snowflake art craft, a visit by Rainbow the Clown, a Lego Creation Building contest and more. The temperatures are expected to rise this weekend but there will still be enough activities for you to get outside and have some fun!
SWEET TREATS — For the 11th year, the Dunkirk Teachers Association and the National Honor Society teamed up to deliver 172 dozen cookies (that’s 2,064 for those of you wondering) to local seniors in Dunkirk. It’s wonderful gesture and a good way to mark Valentine’s Day to bless others in our region.
WORST
SNOWMOBILING DEATHS — Fourteen snowmobilers have died this year in New York state. Last year there were four deaths and 10 the year before that. Most of New York’s deaths have occurred when snowmobilers crash into trees or other obstructions. Snowmobiling is an enjoyable sport, but riders need to be cautious when traveling the trails. One wrong turn and your life is over. In Chautauqua County, our snowmobile clubs work hard at keeping the trails groomed. Enjoy your ride. Don’t push it. And for obvious reasons, this year, stay off all lakes and ponds. Ten snowmobilers in the Northeast have drowned from falling through thin ice. Even our outdoor columnist Gene Pauszek warns fishermen that’s it’s just too warm to be ice fishing.
