Highs and lows: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

RT. 60 RUMBLE STRIPS — On Route 60 between Fredonia and Cassadaga there is a rumble strip. The strip can alert drivers who start to veer into the oncoming lane. After last month’s fatal bus/car crash, the state has decided to put rumble strips between Cassadaga and Gerry. Route 60 is a busy road. This will help make it safer.

WEATHER — Temperatures reached 69 degrees Friday in Dunkirk. That’s about double our average temperature for this time of year. Two years ago, snow could be measured by the foot. Friday, snow was hard to find even on the hilltops. For snowmobilers and cross country skiers, it’s not good. But the reality is our winter is so long, it’s nice to get a break in the middle.

DUNKIRK-FREDONIA STEELERS — For the first time since 2009, the Dunkirk-Fredonia Steelers will be playing in an NHL arena. Sunday the Steelers will take on the Iroquois Chiefs at KeyBank Center in downtown Buffalo for the High School Hockey Super Sunday Mixed Division Championships. Next weekend the Steelers will be in Long Island for the state hockey playoffs. Last year the Steelers were state champions. We wish them the best both Sunday and next weekend.

WORST

PAYING FOR THE INTERCONNECT — County Executive Vince Horrigan recommended Fredonia not join the North County Water District at this time and instead move forward in installing an interconnect between the village and the city of Dunkirk for water. The reason is quite simple; should something ever happen to Fredonia’s water supply, a backup system needs to be in place. But some Fredonia officials, including Phyllis Jones, James Lynden and Athanasia Landis asked why the village should be financially responsible for the interconnect. The reason is simple. An interconnect benefits Fredonia and Fredonia alone. The towns of Dunkirk, Portland, Pomfret, Sheridan or the village of Brocton are not going to benefit from Fredonia having a back-up water system. It’s not something the North County Water District should have to fund.
