Still paying for the past

Former Forestville elected officials never hesitated to point out what a great job the former Streets Department foreman was doing on a fairly regular basis. As with most things those board members said, it turned out to be untrue.

What the town of Hanover has found is plenty of neglect at the former village barn. The village dissolved on Dec. 31 and since then, tools have been missing and leftover equipment has not been maintained.

In all, the town has spent almost $23,000 on repairs and replacements. Forestville, which raised taxes more than 100 percent in 2014, would have faced another crisis if it was still in existence to pay for or repair these items.

Hanover is likely to be reimbursed by the state due to the consolidation of the village into the town. That’s the good news.

The unfortunate news is the former village. Missing items and paperwork are an indication of the mess many did not fully understand. Residents, with Hanover Highway Superintendent Steve D’Angelo overseeing operations, are in much better hands.
