Taking path for progress

Talk about going out on top. Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan has excelled and accomplished just about every goal he set to achieve since taking office in 2014.

His start began with the controversial sale of the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk, which was approved by the Legislature. It has since continued with a number of initiatives that he promised would happen:

¯ A north county water district, which will have at least six potential partners in a project that area businesses and New York state is embracing.

¯ The dissolution of Forestville, which went to the county for a loan once it ran out of money.

¯ A National Comedy Center in Jamestown that builds on the popularity of having a famous hometown native in Lucille Ball.

¯ Lower property tax burdens for county homeowners as well as county contracts that lower the total compensation in terms of benefits for the employees.

¯ A Regional Solutions Commission, which has the county as a finalist for a $20 million grant for consolidation.

Horrigan’s greatest asset, however, was collaborating and communicating. Most local officials and boards were appreciative of the approach.

Whoever our next county executive will be can learn plenty from Horrigan’s actions and efforts. He put others first in making Chautauqua County finally look as though it is making true progress.
