COUNTY: Just who will be in race?

We are less than eight months away from the next election for Chautauqua County executive. Just who will be running?

Current Executive Vince Horrigan announced last month that he would not seek a second term and thus far there are a couple of names that have been floated to the OBSERVER that could be possible candidates. This is no small dilemma for both parties and while the Democrats have a fairly solid grasp on Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown, countywide our voters tend to go Republican.

Interestingly, Democrats have trouble finding candidates to run against strong state leadership in state Sen. Catharine Young and Assemblyman Andrew Goodell. On the other side, there was not a Republican challenger in Dunkirk for the top office and Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi, a Democrat, has had little opposition during his terms.

One thing is certain, however: voters need time to learn about who will be seeking office. Horrigan has this county moving in a positive direction. We need someone who will build on this.
