Efficient system is paying off

An article over the weekend once again proved of the benefits of not going at it alone. Both the village of Silver Creek and the town of Hanover have teamed up in one contract to receive police protection from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department.

It was not too long ago some in the village were fighting the elimination of its department. But since 2013, when a tough decision was made in Silver Creek, complaints have been kept to a minimum.

“The biggest issue (of the department) was the cost of benefits,” said Trustee Warren Kelly. “They were outrageous.”

In a village of 2,800 residents, the department was costing $556,305. That’s a huge cost to an entity that has lost residents and businesses.

Today, the village and town pay $550,590. That’s less than the 2012 figure for the village — and the coverage serves all 7,100 residents, including the village.

That, for all intents and purposes, is a much better and efficient way.
