HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:
BEST
BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY — We wanted to wish Dorothy “Dot” Patterson a late happy birthday. The Chautauqua Nursing Rehabilitation Center resident turned 107 years old! When asked what is the secret to long life, she simply replied, “If I tell you, it wouldn’t be a secret!”
ART WINNER — Congratulations goes out to Jonna Marie Grigelevich. The Brocton High School junior was announced the winner by Rep. Tom Reed in this year’s Congressional High School Art Competition. Her piece “Buoyancy” will be on display in the United States Capitol for one year.
FUN IN GOWANDA — Have you visited Gowanda recently? If not, this weekend might be a great day to go and “Rediscover Gowanda” and attend the festival with the same name. There will be carnival rides, train rides, a community jam session, raffles, yard sales, 5k races and more. It should be a fun day. See Thursday’s OBSERVER for a complete schedule.
WORST
SCHOOL ELECTION TIMES — Did you vote Tuesday in your local school elections? If so, did you know when to vote? It’s not that easy to know. Brocton and Dunkirk’s voting times were noon to 8 p.m. In Forestville it was 1-8 p.m. In Cassadaga Valley, Ripley and Westfield, it was 2-8 p.m. In Fredonia, voting was 2-9 p.m. In Silver Creek, voting was 1-9 p.m. Pine Valley voting times were noon to 9 p.m. If you live in Chautauqua Lake, it was 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. If this seems a little ridiculous, it is. The Board of Elections should just set one time and be done with it. This is not something worthy of “local control.”
