HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

HONORING THE FALLEN — Memorial Day is more than just picnics and the unofficial start of summer. It’s a day to remember those who have died defending our country. We want to say thank you to the men and women who are organizing a number of Memorial Day services Monday. A full list will be published in the Sunday OBSERVER. It’s important to remember and honor their sacrifices.

NEW SECTION VI RECORD — The Fredonia Hillbillies baseball team is once again Section VI Class B2 champions. This is their seventh year in a row earning that distinction, which set a record for the most consecutive Section titles. The previous record holder was the Frewsburg Bears, which won six from 2007-2012. We tip our hat not only to the boys but also to the coaching staff, especially Vince Gullo, who has lead the team since 2002. Good luck to the team as it plays for the overall Class B championship today.

K-9 HONORS — The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is adding a new dog to its staff. And its name? K-9 Link. The German Shepherd was named after Deputy Kevin Link, a member of the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years and a school resource officer at Silver Creek for nearly three years. Deputy Link died unexpectedly in October at the age of 50. His wife, Kelly, believes her husband would be honored. We think it is a fitting gesture as well.

WORST

REJECTED FOR THE WALL — In 1969, Terry Lee Henderson of Westfield was one of 74 killed after their ship collided with an Australian aircraft carrier in the South China Sea during a nighttime training exercise. Henderson was on the USS Frank E. Evans because of the Vietnam Conflict. However, because the accident occurred outside the Vietnam combat zone, their names have never been added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Earlier this week, the Pentagon once again refused to add their names. Even though Henderson’s name will not be added to the Wall, may we in Western New York remember him and his family, especially this Memorial Day weekend.
