Missing boat on access

On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office issued a press release urging New Yorkers to hit the beaches across the state this weekend as Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer.

“New York’s unparalleled beaches and lakes offer outdoor recreational activities that are second to none,” Cuomo said. “With Memorial Day weekend fast approaching, I encourage visitors from near and far to take a trip and experience these great natural gems for themselves.”

But while Evangola State Park and Allegany State Park get a mention in the news item, Lake Erie State Park off Route 5 near Brocton does not.

It adds to one of our recreational water problems. We need better access and cleaner beaches on Lake Erie to draw additional tourists. In Dunkirk, there’s a couple in Point Gratiot and Wright Park. Hanover might have the best at Sunset Bay.

But access to the water remains a problem for area residents despite the lake’s connection to this region. Lake Erie State Park’s absence on Cuomo’s list, however, is a head scratcher.
