More funding for dissolution

Hanover, which was to be expected, has its hands full in the wake of the dissolution of the village of Forestville. It is a good problem for all of us to have as the village was in disarray, but the town continues to learn more about the problems of the past and many of them deal with money.

County Legislator Terry Niebel, R-Sheridan, whose district includes another soon-to-be dissolved village in Cherry Creek is closely watching the events taking place in Hanover. He sees the good will from the town, but knows there is only so much it can do. That’s why he is sponsoring a resolution that would assist municipalities with added funding of up to $50,000.

As Hanover has learned, the first year of dissolution or a consolidation, situations will arise that are unforeseen with expenses unanticipated in terms of repairs or the need for improved equipment. County assistance, through funds from the sales tax, will help ease any increased financial burden.

That would be a major help right now for Hanover — and would be another benefit to those who voted to dissolve Forestville.

County legislators will be considering this resolution on Wednesday at the Legislature meeting. With all the talk and efforts for regionalism in this county, this is one more benefit that will come with fewer governments. This resolution is an easy “yes” for lawmakers.
