Combined effort benefits all

After a significant ground breaking, it will not be long until many area residents — who support regional efforts — can drink to that. A number of officials from around the region took part in the hard-hat and shovel event on Friday outside Dunkirk Town Hall.

The symbolism is huge. Communities working together to provide regional water, a precious resource, to towns and villages near the lakefront.

“It is indeed a historic moment for Chautauqua County when we have the north county working together on a common purpose to bring critical infrastructure to insure that our future is better,” State Assemblyman Andrew Goodell said.

It’s not just a big deal here, it is also in Albany where partnerships between municipalities are becoming more evident. And remember, this is not just about government. It’s also about our economic partners.

Ask any business, especially those who have remained in our region, and they will tell you how important reliable water is. Nestle Purina wants it. Cott needs it. And Athenex, which is to be building a facility in the town of Dunkirk soon, is thrilled to have the district.

Of course, more partners have an open invitation to join in this historic project. But there are some requirements. You keep an open mind and see a willingness to grow and invest in your community.

That means keeping whatever egos in check.
