HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

FEEDING FREDONIA — Help a neighbor in need. From Oct. 16-20, a number of local businesses have agreed to be a drop-off site for non-perishable food items during their regular business hours. The items will be sent to the Fredonia Food Pantry, located at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, 219 Central Ave. Food needed includes beans, canned fruit, canned meats, canned vegetables, cereal, coffee, dry milk, peanut butter, rice, soups, canned spaghetti sauces and pasta. Thank you to the organizers as well as the participating businesses of this year’s Feeding Fredonia Challenge.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB HELP — The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County has raised $112 that will be donated to the Hurricane Maria relief effort. This disaster touches close to home for many of the club’s members. We applaud the children who helped make baked goods and did other things to assist those in need.

UNITED WAY HELPS — United Way’s Administrative Assistant Sonia Figueroa was one of many from the Dunkirk community who lost communication with family members after Hurricane Maria. She couldn’t reach her grandchildren. The United Way organized a “baby shower” for people like Figueroa to donate. All week long, people were able to drop off baby items, which will be shipped to Puerto Rico. We think this was a wonderful idea and we salute those who donated.

WORST

BANNING POLITICAL SIGNS — Fredonia’s Code Enforcement Officer has been sending out letters to residents that the political signs they have out on their lawns is a little too early. The problem is it appears residents have the right to post the signs now. According to a legal memorandum by the New York Department of State, regulations on when signs can be placed are likely to be struck down by the courts since it’s guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Last year the city of Dunkirk backed off issuing violation letters. Fredonia should probably do the same.
