Regional help to non-participant

Crews from the city of Dunkirk and town of Pomfret came to the aid of the village of Fredonia and its Department of Public Works. For whatever reason, the village was inundated with a number of water main breaks from Wednesday evening until Friday morning.

Fredonia faces what every other municipality does — aging infrastructure that needs replacing and constant care. However, both the city and Pomfret are partners in the north county water district. Fredonia is not.

Those two entities still offered to help the village — which is on an island when it comes to regional efforts. When the district is up and running, will these entities still help Fredonia if it has problems in the future with its water system?

That’s a huge question for those village users — and students connected to the State University of New York at Fredonia.
