Smart idea on the roads
One Dunkirk Town Board member is asking all the right questions. Harry Walldorff, after looking into equipment and costs, is beginning to wonder if it is really worth having a highway department in the municipality.
“I think we need to really seriously consider about whether we need to run a highway department or not. For 7 miles (of road) and what’s in our budget, we really need to sit down and talk with Sheridan and Pomfret and see can if we do something,” he said at a recent meeting.
After the resignation of Anthony Pulci, highway superintendent, it is an excellent suggestion.
For the most part, the town has thought regionally. It uses Dunkirk city police, the county sheriff and state police for patrols. It will be a member of the new North Chautauqua Water District.
Having another municipality take on its small amount of roads? That makes sense too.
We hope the discussion continues — and Pomfret or Sheridan — has an interest.
