Talking proud about Westfield

Last week’s battle for the Little League girls 8-10 state softball title in Dunkirk was filled with excitement, especially with a hometown team battling.

Westfield opened with a loss in the double-elimination tournament, but fought hard — all the way until Saturday in the semifinals. In heart-breaking fashion, they fell in extra innings, 3-2.

It did not take away from the success. “I’m really proud of the girls,” said Coach Shawn Gnadzinski. “The plays that they’ve made, the compliments they’ve received from other teams, coaches, the community, the comments are amazing. The girls are upset, but they should be very proud. They’ve played with a lot of class.”

They never gave up — and they won the hearts of many who attended.
