Dunkirk: Races generate some excitement

There was a buzz over the weekend — and it was not just from the speed boats that came to Dunkirk for the first Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix.

As noted throughout the recent days, there was excitement and lots of traffic along our waterfront and pier as the city had its day in the sun. Lake Erie waters also cooperated as it was not too choppy.

Even before the events, Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas noted his enthusiasm. “We have many people from out of town who have been contacting us for information, so we’re expecting a lot of tourists,” he said late last week. “The hotels around here are pretty much booked. Our local merchants should be experiencing a big boost to their sales.”

While the event was a crowd-pleaser, the sustainability is the biggest question for the race going forward. But in recent days, the action proved to be a winner with residents and onlookers.
