Lending hand after Florence

Two people from Chautauqua County are making a commitment of time and energy to assist those impacted by Hurricane Florence. Both Ron Chwojdak of Silver Creek and Nicole Roma of Jamestown are heading to the Carolinas to assist in relief efforts.

You can help as well — even if you cannot be there.

The American Red Cross is reminding others they can assist by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word FLORENCE to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Residents can also help by giving blood.

Red Cross officials report more than 140 blood drives have been canceled through early next week due to Hurricane Florence, resulting in over 4,200 uncollected blood and platelet donations. Eligible donors in unaffected areas are urged to make an appointment now to give blood or platelets to help maintain the nation’s blood supply.

Many former Western New Yorkers have moved to the Carolinas and may have been impacted by the storm. Lending a hand — with cash or a blood donation — is one way to be a good neighbor from far away.
