Sharing: Brocton, Portland lead the way
Give credit to Portland town Supervisor Dan Schrantz and Brocton village Mayor Richard Frost. At a time when everyone — non-profits, businesses and governments — are being asked to do more with less, these leaders have found a solution.
Portland is sharing its highway Superintendent Ken Becker, with Brocton, to oversee maintenance of the roads in both the village and town.
Imagine that. This at a time when other entities, such as the city of Dunkirk and village of Fredonia, continue to go their separate ways and look to add staffing instead of working together.
Even Becker, who is charged with working with both entities is optimistic about the possibilities. “This is the first time that both the village representatives and the town met at the same table, and that’s where I wanted to go with this — knowing that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s happy, and then going from there,” he said.
We need more Ken Beckers — as well as more local leaders who think like those from Brocton and Portland.
