Strange silence over a letter

Why the hush? In a public meeting, opinions are allowed.

Except in Fredonia.

On Monday, village Trustee Doug Essek attempted to read a letter by an employee who resigned. The mayor and attorney would not allow it.

Instead, Mayor Athanasia Landis then provided her take on what happened. “So, Mr. (Perry) Mitchell was demoted from his provisional position by the board for quite a few reasons. Main reason, he asked for it. He asked me, he asked members of this board, he asked the previous administrator. As a matter of fact, I can tell you the quote, ‘Mayor, I made a mistake.’

“I decided to give him another chance, to wipe the slate clean. … It worked very well in the beginning,” Landis went on to say. “He was responsive, he was knowledgeable, he was on time … Then last winter we started having problems.”

Essek never read Mitchell’s letter. We heard the mayor’s take, but not Mitchell’s thoughts.
