Priest needs to be removed

For the Diocese of Buffalo, there is no escaping the guilt. Seventy-eight priests are now named on a list that ties them to sexual abuse.

One of those priests facing questions is right here in Dunkirk at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. As unfortunate as it is, the Rev. Dennis Riter has been named in a lawsuit and was removed from the church earlier this year before being returned in late June.

The black cloud for the diocese has only become darker since July. Simply put, if the diocese is serious about turning the corner for the future, it must remove Riter — who is named in a lawsuit — from pastoring at the city church.

Appearances, in this scandal, are everything. If the church is serious about moving ahead, it must take action on Riter. Otherwise, nothing has changed.
