SOS — Staying On Subject

May 4, 2010 - John D'Agostino

Once bloggers got past the insults and complaints — most directed at yours truly — it seems as though there may be some suggestions worth looking at put forward by Brocton’s Support Our School group.

Before going further, let's begin with the reality: in terms of savings, many of these five pages of ideas are about nickels and dimes. One thousand dollars here, $100 there. It does not make up for the big bucks. Those are the contracts — payroll and benefits.

Also of note: Brocton residents seem to think Westfield is a good fit for a school merger. That is no sure thing. Westfield already turned down a merger with Ripley. Why would they say OK to Brocton?

As noted in our April "Newsmaker of the Month," almost all the Brocton teachers who led the "Vote No" campaign — including the friends and family team — do not want to be part of the solution. They are apparently not part of SOS anymore since they are greatly opposed to sacrificing any pay or benefits.

Imagine that.

My thanks to Steve Smith, who added many of the suggestions. Above is a link to the previous blog. We also plan to have a reporter do a follow-up on these items and the sports booster plans.
