An exceptional boy

June 28, 2010 - John D'Agostino

This morning, I had the pleasure of meeting Christian Lopez, one of the boys who will be deported to Mexico on July 11.

I cannot say enough about the character of the young man. He completed fourth grade this year in the Fredonia Central Schools, receiving above average to excellent marks on his report card. He someday hopes to become a doctor.

He also hopes he can be back in the United States.

Unfortunately, though he was born in the U.S. and is an American citizen, his mother will be taking him — and the rest of her children — back to Mexico. Really, as a parent, I cannot blame her.

Though readers have read the two stories documenting the family — and have been forming their opinions — it is always easy to make a judgment when you do not know the full story.

Going to Mexico is an unfair choice for Christian, who has great potential and superb manners. He will be with his family, but his potential is likely greater in Fredonia.

We at the newspaper know the law must send the family back. That still does not make it right for a youth with so much potential.
