A federal freeze

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels recently noted in The Wall Street Journal that "a look around the American economy suggests that it’s time to break out the brandy."

Daniels noted some of his ideas for a time-limited emergency growth program aimed at bringing in new private investment. One of his ideas is a no-brainer — a federal hiring and pay freeze.

"Better yet," Daniels wrote on Sept. 10, "cut federal pay, which now vastly outstrips private-sector wages by 10 percent during the emergency term and freeze it after that."
