Seeking some 'control'

October 28, 2010 - John D'Agostino
In my Oct. 29 "Publisher’s notebook," on Page A3 there will be some applause for the members — mainly the Democrats — in the Chautauqua County Legislature for proposing additional reductions to the budget proposed by County Executive Greg Edwards.

Edwards, who is running as lieutenant governor with "Mad as Hell" Carl Paladino who intends to cut state spending 20 percent, seemed to have thought last month he had done as much slicing as he could. Fortunately, some Democrats and Republican legislators are coming up with another plan.

Which leads us to other entities that seem to continue to run their cities, towns, villages and schools with a business as usual attitude, which includes tax and spending hikes.

Is that what will turn our dilapidated economy around? I don't think so. In fact, a control board — like the ones used for the city of Buffalo and Erie County — is most likely what is needed.

Legislator John Gullo said it best. Most in office do not have the "political will" to make tough choices.
