| | Talent in the 1 percentDecember 8, 2011 - John D'AgostinoWhere did the Occupy Fredonia activists go? Today would be a perfect day to get the message across that you are part of the 99 percent — the segment of people who are not part of the wealthiest 1 percent. And why would today be a perfect day to Occupy? One of the most talented musicians in the world, Yo-Yo Ma, is at Fredonia State University tonight. He is part of the 1 percent the 99 percent protests because he is one of a kind. We are fortunate to have him here. But he would not be here this week — if not for some major donations. So thank you to Fredonia State, Yo-Yo Ma and the major donors, many of whom are part of the 1 percent. Article Comments(4)judeyeDec-20-11 8:05 AM Yes, what a crazy letter. Occupy is not necessarily against all individuals in the 1%. In fact did you know that many individuals in the 1% actually SUPPORT the Occupy movement? Yes it is a fact. Many have actually even gone down to the wall st protest. Many more, though have not gone down, have supported them in words and very generous donations. The point is not against the 1%. It is against the 1% getting more than their fair share of tax breaks. It is against them using their money to try to buy our democracy (hello Koch brothers). It is against them trying to influence our laws, our protections, and our very foundation of liberties. ConradDec-19-11 7:44 PM What an absolutely incredible simplification of the Occupy movement. After reading it I was embarrassed for the writer. GertrudeDec-14-11 5:03 PM Correction--"Occupy has nothing against Yo-Yo-Ma or the 1 %." GertrudeDec-14-11 5:02 PM How misleading! Occupy has nothing against Occupy--or donations. The fact is, most of the 99% are generous people who ALSO donate and would do so on a bigger scale if we enjoyed careers that were rewarded beyond one's ability to work that "hard" in a 24-hour day. It's a lot of luck, being wealthy, and choosing the "right" career path. But what if we all did? Tell the whole story--about the tax deductions the 1 % donations enjoy, about the vast wealth that means not only are the 1 % spreading tax-deductible money, but they're also still buying multiple mansions and boats. You simplify the picture to a fault. Post a Comment | |
