| | Breaking news (not really): Silver Creek is No. 1May 9, 2012 - John D'AgostinoApparently the Empire Center for New York State Policy is picking on Silver Creek. In a breakdown of what municipal entity pays the highest tax burden, the winner in our region is Silver Creek. Its $44.95 per $1,000 of assessed valuation backs up our point in editorials and commentaries that the village is spending too much money for its size. Other high spending villages with high taxes, based on an average county home sale of $81,120, according to the report include: • Brocton — $43.52. • Gowanda, in Erie County — $42.94. • Fredonia — $37.84. • Westfield — $37.61. • Cassadaga — $35.42. • Forestville — $33.89. • Gowanda, Cattaraugus County — $32.57. The highest taxed village in Western New York, however, belongs to Wellsville in Allegany County. Taxpayers there pay $62.63 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Ouch.
