As budgets climb, many try to keep extra spending in check

When it comes to watching overtime costs, it appears most municipalities are doing just that. It also appears the lower the overall budget, the less likely overtime costs are spent. Out of the 22 municipalities in the OBSERVER's circulation area, 18 responded to a Freedom of Information request, seeking the municipality's total budget costs and total overtime cost spent in the last budget year. Of those 18 municipalities, there was a total of $57,761,655 spent. Of that amount, $1,051,391 went to overtime costs, which equals 1.8 percent of the total budgets. The lowest amount of overtime costs was by the village of Perrysburg, which had no overtime costs and also had the lowest overall budget of $272,812. The second-lowest overtime costs was by the village of Cassadaga, which spent $300 on overtime costs.
