Twenty years ago — 1988 “It’s like trying to eat dinner in someone’s bathroom.” That’s how one Dunkirk man described the impossiblity of enjoying an outdoor picnic in neighborhoods downwind from the Dunkirk sewage treatment plant. The problem is the raw sewage odor that permeates the area around the plant during the summer months. Residents complained that sometimes just opening a window could make you sick. One said the odor that wafts through the area is so bad it turns curtains and windows brown. The problem has been going on for years with nothing getting done because the city of Dunkirk does not have the estimated $300,000 for the necessary improvements to eliminate the odor.
