"Whether we need it or not, we have to use all our allotment of funds. Otherwise we'll lose part of those funds the next year."

BINGO! The author made one mistake in the quote above. They won't loose part of those funds, they'll loose ALL of those funds. On other comments here, I've stated examples of this in the military as I was one who was forced to spend their whole budget or loose it. This is the biggest cause of waste in the DOD and other branches of government. Get this under control and we could save billions each year.

Thanks Ann for a personal account of the waste in the defense dept.

I read this comment has many concerned...“The Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up here…. I’m not an Israeli senator. I’m a United States senator.”

I cannot agree more with him. EVERYONE in our Congress must have our country as it's focal point. Not any other idea, pledges, or countries..they make an the USA. Some I think are blinded by the color of money and power, not even looking at where and why it comes from.

I opposed waste in all departments, and the type of waste discussed by the write is present at all level of the government, even at the local level.

The issue I see with Hagel is that his stances, while not blatantly anti-military, but hs is a major "dove" and as such my concern is that rather then eliminating waste he will eliminate needed programs that will stregthen our forces.

There is nothing wrong with being a "dove" when it comes to the use of our military, but the DoD's job is to do everything they can to have our troops ready if the call comes not trying to avoid it.

Personally his views strike me more of what is needed when heading the State Dept not the Defense Dept.

The Military wastes more money than any branch of government, and has the worst accounting system on top of it. Nobody dares to say anything though, as in this day and age it makes you "UnAmerican" or "Unpatritoic". God help anyone trying to say otherwise. (God supports the Military, you know) I saw perfectly good items thrown away before inspections because having too many items was as bad a "gig" as being short an item. Weapons programs generally have cost overuns so large as to double the cost, but no questions asked. I'd say one could cut the Military budget in half and not miss one necessary item needed for getting the job done.
