You don't need to arrest someone to get them help. If the police feel there is a danger to himself or those around him, they can do a pick-up order and take him for an eval.

The arrest may be the only leverage they have to be sure he gets the help he needs. His job will most likely be over I doubt they will put a gun in his hand anymore.

I am shocked that they would arrest this person for an incident where there clearly was a mental health issue. Why the rush? Would they have arrested him if he was not a police officer? Let the man get the care he needs before going forth with legal action. This is the problem with our mental health system.
