I have known the VanScoters all my life. They are kind, gentle people, who have contributed to this area for many, many years. It is hard for me to believe how cruel people are when commenting on this site. Calling Jack "an old man!" Where is the respect that is due this gentleman? Instead of wishing them well, the criticism just rolls off people's tongues. There seems to be no room for compassion. Jack made a mistake and thank goodness the outcome was not devastating. He and Connie could have drowned! I do agree however, that once a certain age is reached, a person should have to pass stringent testing to keep a driver's license. Lives could be saved.

Wiseup, Mr. Bear, and others who personally attack people: Would you do so if you had to sign your real name? Probably not.

I totally agree that this was a direct posted warning and they deliberately disobeyed it. Now they should pay for the services rendered. BILL THEM!

judeye you admit you drive around barriers? How stupid of you!!! These people should be made to pay all the rescue costs. Maybe it's time this guy and Judeye STOP driving on our highways!

Another classic example of why we need mandatory retesting at a certain age. How many times do you see stories like this on the news? Mistaking the gas for the brake pedal, something like this, or plowing into a crowd of people. Like it or not judgment and ability become impaired as we get older. Deal with it.

I read the account yesterday when the story broke and pictured the driver choosing to drive through a stream. When I saw the picture today I was shocked. He chose to drive through a lake. Glad he and his wife are fine.

Friends to them both, I am thankful that they were not seriously injured. Sending many good prayers for quick healing to both.
I myself have gone around those very barriers on occasion in the past. (as many others have as well..I was far from alone) Now I know why I should never do this. A warning to us all.

People like that should be billed for the rescue costs.
