This is an excellent reminder that we need to tend to ALL aspects of the problem.

I agree with many of the points in this article.

We clearly need to do more to help those with serious mental illnesses. Yet, we just cut millions from the state budget for mental health.

Is there a law that if you own a gun, and someone else gets to it because you did not have it locked up, then you will be charged as well? If not, I propose one now.

We do need to teach more responsibilities that come with more freedoms.

Great starting points to work on some of the very real issues that might have a positive impact on reducing gun violence in our country.. We need to have many more real discussions like this. thanks for a good article.

Judeye, gets it wrong again and again. Someone steals a gun and the owner is at fault. That same logic emptied the asylums and gave us gun free zones. Judeye, do you understand anything in life ? Judeyes got a law for everything. The gun control debate is nothing more than a control thing. Blacks have been killing themselves in droves for years, no outcry, not even in the black community as they will be called a snitch. In Cook county , Illinois, the guns are obtained right in that county. Then white kids get shot, uhoh, a crisis for the libs to take away our freedoms. Judeye condemns millions of legal guns, a great error in judgement. That democratic intuiton again. I propose we prosecute the gun free zone nuts. Make concealed carry legal . The anti gun idiots, after a failure of a gun free zone want to make a larger one by more laws. Talk about retardation, the first idea failed and they repeat it with a bigger version. A dog to his vomit. A liberal to his utopia.

Steinerdzzz...its more than obvious that you should NEVER be allowed to own a gun, let alone be within yards of one. And if you have any guns, then I would wholeheartedly support confiscating yours.

Based on your mindless rants, like the other nut jobs, you are a poster child for gun control.

I agree with the freedoms point -- since 9/11, over 270,000 Americans have been killed with guns. So, either we have legions of crazies roaming around, or we have legions of folks -- all rational -- who crazily believe firearms makes this country a safer place.

Thank you Mr. Westland for your common sense article. There are too many here who "over think" these problems.Sadly they'll nod their heads in agreement with the wisdom you've set forth and then start over with calls for new layers of laws(that don't work)and trashing our god given rights.

Dc you don't want a government, you want a babby-sitter. You don't like anyone having things you don't want them to have. And, as usual, do as I say or they are not willing to compromise is the mantra. How many human beings aren't here because of abortion since 9/11? But hey, they can't verbalize their desire to live, so it's fine murdering innocents. Your calling people with a different opinion than yours nut jobs really helps facilitate any discussion also. You have shown time and again on this site to have no patience with anyone that disagrees with you. Are you sure you aren't sneaking onto your parents computer? Your actions are better suited to a spoiled child than an adult.

"Is there a law that if you own a gun, and someone else gets to it because you did not have it locked up, then you will be charged as well? If not, I propose one now."

Why limit it to guns? If someone steals a car should the owner be charged with any crime to theif commits? Or what if someone steals someone's meds? Or how about when a kid gets their hands on and overdoes on medicines or takes some poison?

What?

Despite my views that we, as a society, are vastly over medicated, I think in your case some form or psych meds are in surely in order.

I think the major rub regarding the gun debate is the fact that we, as a society, make the wrong choice many times about what our priorities are. For example, mental health, counseling, psychologists, psych meds, people who have a therapist are all kind of shunned, mocked, and not taken seriously. So, when the gun debate kicks into high gear and gun owners say, "Hey wait, this is a mental health issue," they are not taken seriously. Their point is a valid one; however, the problem of mental health is not taken seriously. I am a mental health therapist, and I do something a little different in that I go to people's houses because so many of the indigent don't get treatment because they don't have money and transportation. I am not paid a lot but my reward comes from a different source. I am a paid songwriter and counsel part-time. My point is if we don't start taking mental health seriously and make it a priority, we are going to suffer the natural-logical consequences of ou

"My point is if we don't start taking mental health seriously and make it a priority, we are going to suffer the natural-logical consequences of ou"

I think part of why so many brush off mental illness is the same as many other issues and that is one of the watering down of psychological issues.

It has got so bad that, as a society, we've decided it's okay to medicate children so are to avoid the symptoms of childhood. I'll never forget the 20/20 report years ago that looked at this issue and they showed many grade schools where over 90% of the male students and 80% of all students were on medication for ADHD.

Now I'm not saying that some kids aren't ADHD, or some adults need various psych meds, but I think we've gone overboard and in doing so it's resulted in people's view of mental illness being diluted.

Mike must want to pay for all those unwanted babies who would be born with useless parents if not for abortion. If you think things are bad with abortion what would government spending be with all those unwanted babies people would be having if you had your way. More then half of the children born today don't have both parents as it is. Read the birth list. People like mike want it both ways, for kids to have babies and for the taxpayer not to have to pay for them. It doesn't work that way.

No bull, what I would like is a return to some moral outrage at teen mothers. Not making them into some*******media darling with their own flipping television show. Maybe a little peer pressure would help? But the liberal mindset is what brought us to the carefree attitude's of today's teenagers, isn't it?

speaking of freedoms, these big mouth republicans never served

Tom Delay Mitch McConnell Trent Lott John Ashcroft Jeb Bush Karl Rove Sean Hannity Rush Limbaugh Bill O'Reilly Pat Buchanan Ted Nugent Saxby Chambliss Paul Wolfowitz Big Newt Gindrich Rudy Giuliani

Instead of listening to those who are all for war, lets honor those that served for our freedom.

Last I heard, making a baby requires a sperm donor. Why just blame the female in the equation Mike? Oh yeah, y chromosomes are somehow excused. Kind of like how gun sellers and manufacturers are somehow excused from the damage their products bring to society all in the name of profit.
